The 74 year old slaughterhouse that stands on 10 Shajing Road (虹口区沙泾路10号) in Hongkou has been remade as 1933, a lifestyle and design center. It’s a former slaughterhouse that’s been transformed into a large space for art, music and restaurants.
When walking through 1933, you will definitely get a creepy, slaughterhouse vibe in places (one of the walkways is called Cattle Road), although the overwhelming aura of death has been replaced with cool tunes playing overhead while you window shop and explore.

Everything revolves around a central core that can be accessed by a series of bridges that cross back and forth at various places. The space between the edge and the core is open air and the entire building reeks of Communist era concrete mixed with Art Deco styling.

The mixed in with the still existent “Cattle Road” ramp and the tight shadowy corners gives the building a creepy feeling that is juxtaposed by bright airy spaces, which draw visitors into the communal spaces.

The very top levels of the main building must(should) have been the place where the cows were slaughtered, and it's been transformed into a large open space for concerts which the floor is made by steel and glass. You can look through the bottom when you stand of the stage.

You can get some very nice view from the roof top of the building.

Visit to 1933 is a MUST if you go to ShangHai. The art, architecture and music of the building is just amazing!
How to be there? Just take line 4 or 10 to Hailun exit. If you take exit #3 you’ll come out on Siping Lu. Head south on Siping Lu and at the corner you’ll walk east on Hailun Lu until you get to a canal with a road on either side. Take Shajing or Liaoning Lu south and you’ll see it in a couple minutes. It’s actually a pretty nice little walk.
